Do not give up! Do not lose faith in yourself, as this will only make the process more painful. You have been working really hard, so keep doing that, just approach everything a little differently now. Stop looking for reasons why something didn't work out, and look for new ways to approach jobs and interviews. Next week I will be discussing a better approach to job-hunting, but before I can do that, I want to share with you the success rates of various approaches to job-hunting to reflect upon.
- Internet postings: 4% (10% if your job of interest is internet-based)
- Mailing resumes: 7%
- Newspaper ads: 5%
- Employment agencies: 5%
- Trade journals: 7%
- Job clubs: 10%
- Federal employment office: 14%
- Union halls: 22%
- Asking for job leads: 33%
- Walk-in: 47%
- Yellow Pages: 65%
Those first six approaches are very common, but in total, only give someone a 38% chance of getting a job. I couldn't believe it when it said that only 4% of people who apply for jobs online get the job. It is no wonder that doing everything you think is in your power to get a job still feels like it is not enough. How would you approach the application process differently if you knew ahead of time that the traditional way just was not going to cut it? Whatever you answer is always how you need to approach job hunting!
