Google Is Your New Resume

All of us have unknowingly created our resumes.  If you have any type of presence on the internet, then an employer may be able to do a quick Google search and find links related to you.  These links could be your social media accounts, as well as any public articles or pictures of you.  It is best to keep your social media accounts private, especially if they are not appropriate.  However, sometimes it can be good for a possible future employer to see some of your social media pages if it is related to your field of work in any way (again, as long as it is appropriate).  Here is a link to my Instagram account:  https://www.instagram.com/dana_cornish/  I have made my account public and made my handle my name because I hope that future employers see it.  For example, I want my employer to see that I like to travel because I would hope that they would think that I am comfortable travelling for work!  Several close friends have said that I have made risqué posts by including alcohol on my Instagram.  I am always prepared to defend these posts.  I have a desire to work with brands (which is why some of my posts might look like a paid influencer's posts) as well as a desire to work in the beverage industry.  If employers can see that I enjoy things relevant to their company in my free time, I hope that translates to a deep desire and commitment to work with their company.

At a time when an employee can learn a lot about you before even getting to your resume, how do you make your resume stand out?  For starters, if you mail it, be sure to splurge and use nice stationary.  If you are posting it online, design it in a way that looks different from the hundreds of others that will be online.  Since human resources usually spends eight seconds on a resume, always make sure you are being concise as well as utilizing keywords.  The point of your resume is not to get them to hire you, but to be invited for a face-to-face interview.  Let your resume spark their interest, and then go into detail about yourself or important aspects of your resume in person!
