Just like you maintain your own health, you have to maintain the health of your blogs or websites that you are tracking. One of the best ways to do this is through referrals. After you have signed into analytics, select acquisition from the drop down menu on the left. From here you can select all traffic, and then referrals. Look at the sources that Google Analytics provides. Common sense will tell you when something doesn't look like a website address. If something doesn't look like a website address, you can search for it in google, but don't type it in as a web address. You don't want to be directly taken to a spam website. If the search results do not come up trustworthy you can go in and add a filter to reject this website from being counted as a part of your analytics.
It is extremely important to do this regularly, as not doing it can severely impact your data. A hacker just needs the ID of your Google Analytics account, and then can mess around with your Google Analytics numbers. Also, if a lot of spam websites are going to your website and being counted as a part of your data, then Google will begin to disregard your website in SEO.
You haven't done anything wrong, yet your website just isn't getting the results that you are looking for. When this happens, always take a check back at your referrals if you have not done so recently. Here is a great link that describes how to filter these spam websites out of your results.
