Week 10 - MKTG 348 - Back to Basics (SEO - Blog #17)

In the next few blog posts, I am going to explain why SEO is so important.  While I have spent several blogs on this already, it's important to remember the basics of SEO in general, and not just one company's perspective of SEO.

The relevance of your page compared to the search is obviously the most important aspect.  The more relevant your page is compared to the searchers history and settings in their profile, the better chance the searcher has of seeing your page.  Don't expect to show up on a search if someone searches general fruits and you specialize in strawberries.  While you still might have relevant and important information, a lot of the algorithm depends on past search history as well.  Hopefully an outside link or a better search will lead them to your page!

The quality of the content on your site also makes a big difference.  Do you link to trustworthy sources?  Do people link back to you?  Are you actively posting, commenting, and monitoring your site?  These are all things a search algorithm looks for.  If you don't have recent posts, it might consider your information outdated.

Is your site available to be viewed across multiple device platforms?  If someone is trying to view something on mobile, and maybe your site is the most relevant and is of the highest quality, but you haven't made it available to view on a mobile device, it may not show up first, or on the first page.  You have to be mindful of all the ways your visitors are trying to view your information.

Being mindful of your visitors is extremely important.  Write and curate what you are passionate about.  Writing and curating what you are passionate about will help to ensure that your work is of high quality as you should be enthused to be doing this!  If you have something you are proud of and you want to share it with everyone, why not make it available to everyone?
