Week 2 - MKTG 348 - Living with Artificial Intelligence (AI - Blog #1)

When we first hear the words artificial intelligence, we might think of robots.  Ultimately we have many images and feelings pulse through us in a matter of seconds.  Perhaps at first it is exciting.  Some good Hollywood effects and CGI in any sci-fi can make everything seem exciting.  But then maybe we a filled with a feeling of discomfort.  Things always end up going awry in the sci-fi and humanity has to find their way again.  But artificial intelligence is so much more than mind-controlling robots and the demise of humans.

For example, my favorite thing that I own that relates to artificial intelligence is my software from Dragon.  I use it to write long papers.  It's voice-to-text technology.  However, when I first started using it, there were a lot of mistakes.  Dragon didn't quite know what I was saying.  Now, after using it frequently for months, even for small tasks like emails, there are very few errors in the writing.  It has learned how I speak.  My pronunciation, accent, and quirks.  Most of the error that occur are from my end when I completely botch a word.  This is beautiful artificial intelligence.  It is learning and evolving from what I teach it.  I have to command it to updated and "learn" every time I log out, but that just makes the software better.  Essentially right now, the majority of artificial intelligence is software and how to keep teaching the software and keep it "learning."  Artificial intelligence is most certainly here to stay, it is simply up to us to "teach" it correctly.
