Week 3 - MKTG 348 - Current Artificial Intelligence (AI - Blog #4)


In order to understand Artificial Intelligence better, we are going to take a look at some things that are probably already familiar to you.  Self-driving cars are probably one of the most popular hot topics of conversation right now.  Everyone seems to have an opinion on them.  The car that Google is developing actually has a person inside of it.  This is so that the person, who is a software developer, can see how everything is going.  The developer can get a better grasp on how the car is learning and how it reacts.  This helps the software developer create a better program for the car to use.  The developer is simply updating the software that is run on the hardware.  The hardware is all of the chips and circuit boards inside the overall system.  We are also seeing advances with drones and the ability to fly them from remote locations as well as the instillation of autonomous features and software.  Like self-driving cars, there may one day be self-flying drones.

Another form of AI that you are probably familiar with is your phone!  Have you ever spoken with Siri or Cortana?  Perhaps Alexa?  These are also forms of artificial intelligence.  While they aren't perfect and can sometimes come back with incorrect or irrelevant answers, because people use these assistants on a daily basis, they are learning and will only improve with time!  We are also familiar with robots.  While robots are being mostly used in factories to decrease human error, we are also starting to see some humanoid or animal-like robots with software that is very assistant like.  Again, there is the hardware that is wired into the robot, but the software can continually be rewritten to improve the robot's learning capabilities.  Keeping with the computer theme of technology, a lot of artificial intelligence can be seen in analysis.  AI analysis can scan codes and run sequences in a matter of seconds or minutes depending upon how complex an algorithm is.  Additionally, these algorithms can always be tweaked so that the run and learn differently to improve the output, or the final answer.

Five to ten years ago, would people have thought we would have seen such vast improvements in AI so soon?  There is a lot of research behind AI and "they," the voices of scientists, researchers, programmers, commentators, and the general public, all say that fully autonomous AI is far off.  But how far off is far off truly?  We will never know.  We don't know what happens behind closed doors, in secret meetings, in the brain of a child who just needs to finish school.  The AI answer could come tomorrow, it could come in a different lifetime.  To be prepared for it though, it's best to start brushing up on any and all of your technology skills, and it probably wouldn't hurt to learn some new ones too!
