Week 12 - MKTG 348 - Value of AI in Social Media (SEO - Blog #21)

You are probably on some type of social media platform every day, but have you thought how your actions are analyzed by artifical intelligence?  Facebook has over 800 million users.  This is over 800 million ways that data can be entered into the website.  Algorithms can then analyze all of this data to make a facebook a more enjoyable experience.  This experience includes better tags, filters, feeds, and even facial recognition.  With people just granting permissions left and right so they can use the app or site, do they really know how much information they are giving away?

Pinterest is also another site that has recently relied heavily on the power of artificial intelligence.  Pinterest runs algorithms to understand what types of pins the users are looking for and what boards they are creating.  If you are on pinterest, but don't follow people, don't worry!  Based on your viewing and pinning history, pinterest will ensure you have a full feed and boosted pins so that you stay engaged.  Pinterest even purchased an image recognition software to help pinterest become even more accurate.

While social media can have its benefits, at what point does it become an invasion of privacy?  While the notion comes with an unspoken understanding of what you are signing up for, shouldn't a user still feel safe knowing that their every move on social media isn't being tracked?
